Writing scares me. When I have to write something down for school I freak out inside! Sometimes I worry I'm not saying the right things, or if I'm missing the teacher’s point completely. Other times I worry that I don’t sound intelligent or academic enough, or I'm using too many big words...
The most difficult fear I have to overcome is that I have nothing of substance to tell my reader. There is nothing I hate more than reading or writing something that doesn’t engage me in thought. In my opinion, academic writing is restrictive and boring. The nature of the beast makes me insecure. I'm concerned that I have nothing important to say, and that I sound boring. I can talk your ear off for hours, but when I speak, I frequently rely on gestures, character and vocal ques to get my points across (it’s the dancer in me :) When I write things down in words, I don’t want to just tell you things and give you facts, I want to have something of value to give you.
That is why I am blogging. No more 8 page essays, just free writing about whatever I wanna say... and I know what I wanna say...
I am an artist, and I love art.
I use the term "Art" loosely. To better explain (or rather, not) to you what I mean, I’m going to begin with a quote from folk rock singer/songwriter Ani Difranco:
“Art is why I get up in the morning,
but my
definition ends there...
It doesn’t seem fair
that I'm living for something I can’t
even define.
and there you are right there,
in the meantime.”
Art always has the potential to be present. I enjoy all forms of it, including dance, sculpture, photography, music, jewelry, drawing, choreography, stained glass, architecture and many other kinds... I find new ways to be artistic all the time. I intentionally put myself in positions that allow me to exercise my creativity everyday.
This semester’s creative exercise: BLOGGING!
I really love the freedom of expression that both blogging and art share. In this blog I'm going to describe and illustrate for you some of my more noteworthy artistic experiences and influences. I'm also going to show you some of my own art, as well as some work by friends of mine! I hope that documenting some of my artistic experiences with you inspires you to be creative... or at least gives you a greater appreciation of the arts! The world needs more creativity!
As I mentioned earlier, I'm a bit of an animated speaker and I truly believe it’s because I want you to get the very most out of what I'm saying to you. Therefore, the artist in me wants to bring you visual aids! So I'm going to include lots of images, videos(hopefully), and sound clips. I have lots of things to share with you!
I'll try to keep it clear and organized! I'm really excited about this blog! Enjoy!
Your energy and passion come through loud and clear in your post. The Ani DeFranco quotes works well - is there a different way to use this quote? Consider moving the quote to the top of the page or offsetting from the posts itself. Try to have every word counts, which means if you can say it in fewer words, do it.
